Pub of the Week: Cider Press
A staple on any Gloucester Road pub-crawl, Cider Press has always been little bit of everything to everyone. Students can be found claiming deals on pints and burgers on weeknights; Argyle sweater-clad pub golfers stagger in at the weekend and gravitate towards the shiny bar like drunken moths.
Daytimes are mellow, with sports on the telly and a menu of reasonably priced standard pub fare available, and though the bouncer on the door is likely to put off the family crowd, inside the Cider Press is just the right side of trendy, with a spacious bar area and plenty of seating.
A recent £260,000 investment has seen the pub draw on its namesake and branch out into the craft cider market. The usual range of lagers are still on tap, but posters advertising craft beer and on-trend gin cocktails are a clue that Cider Press is making an attempt to set itself apart from the plethora of other pubs on Gloucester Road.
is needed now More than ever
The shiny new taps behind the bar, set off by red neon, now make up to 28 different craft ciders available at any time, including local offerings like Bristol Portway, and some ciders made with fruits like mango and strawberry, sure to appeal to anyone with a curious streak and a sweet tooth.
Though it’s clearly not in the same league as more established members of the craft cider movement, like The Coronation Tap, the management at Cider Press have certainly made an effort to add something new to the drinking choices on Gloucester Road, and should be applauded for their efforts.
Whether the pub golf lads will notice is another matter.
